Hust
Hust had been developing around the castle, as all the middle-ages cities were used to. Today you can see the ruins of the castle on the top of the Castle hill, it still towers over the city, like a spectre of the past.
During it's long and complicated history this castle had been destroyed and rebuilt many times. The defenders of the city were able to prtect it from tatars, turks and all the imaginable enemies. Hust castle was claimed to be one of the most invincible strongholds of this region. There was a 160 metres well to provide the garrison with water. But in 1766 the lightning has hit the powder tower and the fortress was destroyed. Austrian emperor himself came to audit the damage and decided that it's unable to rebuilt. The castle suffered from the element again. Rubbles became picturesque romantic and a little nostalgic ruins...
You can see all the town from the Castle hill. Above the unimaginably knotty mixed up streets, you'll surely notice the XVth century gothic cathedral. It's profile is expressively military, moreover it's encircled by a two metres high wall. You can find interesting authentical frescos of Hungarian kings, who where canonized by the catholic church, inside.
Not less interesting will be a visit to the St. Anna's cathedral, which was built with the stone from the ruined castle walls. Time set on its tower clock dial will differ from the one on your watch. People in Hust are used to live according to the "local" time. In fact, it's fair and right, because this region is situated in the 1st time zone, unlike the rest territory of Ukraine, which is in the second.
Besides, you can visit an old synagogue, which is decorated with interesting wall paintings. Or a St. Panteleymon's monastery with a curative sourse and a cave church of Iosif Pochaevskij.
