The first performance of the Kyiv Marionette Theatre, founded by the famous Ukrainian producer and artist Mykhailo Yaremchuk, took place in 1989. Chekhov can be named. And as for the children, the Marionette Theatre introduces them to the great fairytales of Ukrainian and foreign writers. Lesya Ukrainka National Academic Theater of Russian Drama (also referred to as "Lesya Ukrainka Theater") was founded in 1979. Its stage traditions enjoy the authority of the professionals and popularity among the audience. The theater produces many important plays of Russian and Ukrainian dramatic art. Its repertoire consists of plays by classical playwrights. Many current movie actors have started its career in the theater. The building of the theater was originally designed in 1875 by Vladimir Nikolayev and housed the Kyiv circus.

The National Philharmonic Hall of Ukraine was founded in 1923. Over the years the hall has been growing together with its fame due to the bright performances of the world music stars on its stage. The acoustic properties of the famous Hall of Columns are unique. Modern technical equipment, the latest recording devices, an auxiliary telecommunication system, equipment for the stage lighting and mechanization have been installed there recently. The National Philharmonic Hall of Ukraine presents a diverse program that includes a full season of concerts by Symphony and Chamber Philharmonic Orchestras, guitar and bayan quartets, bandura trio, chamber and folk ensembles of the National Philharmonic of Ukraine. It constantly conducts international contests and festivals.

The well-known and even legendary theatre is situated in the very heart of the city – on Gorodetskogo street, in a historical 100 years old building. Since 1926 the white and blue edifice has seen many personalities, who are regarded as theater icons. The repertoire of the theater is traditionally diverse. On its stage you can see psychological plays, musicals and comedies. In addition, the troupe`s interest to modern dramaturgy is getting more and more intent. In 1994 the theatre got the status of National Theatre. Nowadays it`s headed by Bohdan Stupka, the national actor of Ukraine. The theater tours a lot. Cherny Kvadrat, or Black Square, is a unique theater of improvisation and an extremely popular center of modern theatrical art. It appeared in the early nineties as a result of a distressing situation. According to the legend, a lot of people gathered in some theatrical studio to enjoy a new play, but the actors weren`t ready to perform it, so they had to improvise. The performance was a great success and became a good tradition and a new theater. Although Cherny Kvadrat is mostly associated with improvisations, its repertoire includes modern performances, experimental theatrical projects and even academic plays. The extremely popular theatre is full every nigh, it has won prizes of many international festivals. Moreover, Cherny Kvadrat is also a studio, a scientific theatrical laboratory and a gathering place for many Ukrainian talented people.

The first and the only private commercial theater in Kyiv. It mostly produces easy plays devoted to love and passion relationships by modern Ukrainian and foreign playwrights. There you can appraise plays by Joe Orton What, Mikhail Zadornov, Nadezhda Ptushkina and Olya Mukhina. Lyubov Titarenko, the founder and the director of the theater, previously was an actress of the State Academic Russian Drama Theatre named after Lesya Ukrainka. She had left the theater for some personal reasons and decided to express herself independently. Today the performances, comedies and tragedies of Titarenko`s theater all try to answer the most discreet human questions. The theatre, situated on the left bank of Dnypro, has a special place among the other Ukrainian theaters. It came into existence on the wave of democratic changes in Ukrainian society in the late seventies of the previous century due to the initiative of Eduard Mitnizky, who headed the company and was the artistic director of the troupe. Today the Academic Theater of Drama and comedy is very popular among the audience and enjoys authority of the professionals. The theater produces classical and new plays of Russian and Ukrainian dramatic art in two languages – Ukrainian and Russian – and has already received over 15 theatrical awards in different nominations. Due to its numerous guest performances the troupe has admirers in different countries of the world, especially in Russia. Its extensive repertoire comprises plays by F. Dostoyevsky, M. Bulgakov, L. Tolstoy, as well as by outstanding modern playwrights. The theater is especially remarkable for its experimental performances. It was one of the first theatres in Kyiv, which established a small stage called The Theatre in the Foyer, where for the first time in the soviet theatre the play in Ukrainian (Lies by Vynnychenko) was staged.
