Cyril Church

St. Cyril's Monastery (Kyrylivskyi monastyr) is a medieval architectural complex in Kyiv, which includes the famous 2th century St. Cyril's Church and combines elements of the 17th and 19th centuries. Being largely Ukrainian Baroque on the outside, the church retains its original Kyivan Rus' interior.
St. Cyril's Monastery was founded in 1140 by Vsevolod Olgovych, the Prince of Chernigov, in the Dorohozhychi neighbourhood of Kyiv and named after his heavenly protector, Cyril of Alexandria. In the second half of the 12th century, Princess Maria, Vsevolod's widow, built the stone church of St. Cyril, which served as an ancestral burial place of the Olgovychi family.
The church contains numerous old frescos, cleaned and restored in the recent times. They all are dedicated to the deeds of Saint Cyril. Outstanding Russian artist Mychail Vrubel participated in the restoration works: he painted the old frescoes in oil and decorated marble iconostasis.
Cyril Church is a must-visit place for all lovers of art and antiquitiy.
